Always attracted by the sciences, Jean-Marie François first of all launched himself into university studies in Physical Education, being talented at sports, in particular gymnastics. Very interested in ‘theoretical’ courses, he produced his end of study dissertation in a biochemistry laboratory. Graduating in Physical Education at the ULg in 1983, he four years later became a Doctor of experimental biomedical sciences at the ULg. In the context of his doctoral training he spent a year in the United States at the famous Mayo clinic. He then held a series of posts in different countries, in the private sector and the academic world. ‘It’s very enriching, having experience both in the academic environment and in biotechnology companies in Belgium and several other countries (USA, France, Holland and Germany), as well as having had the opportunity to tackle various research and development themes,’ he stresses. Since 2006 he has been in charge of a research team at the CPI which, financed by the Walloon Region, in particular focuses on the production of tagatose.
