Jean-Marie Beckers

Background

Completing his studies in 1988, having pocketed a degree in civil engineering (physical mechanics), Jean-Marie Beckers began a doctoral thesis as a FNRS research fellow, under the supervision of Jacques Nihoul (an oceanographer at the ULg), one of the first scientists to create ocean models. Within the framework of his thesis Jean-Marie Beckers developed his own numerical model for the Mediterranean.

He then carried post-doctoral studies at the University of Hamburg, where he met Hans Burchard, who had also developed his own model. During his post-doctoral work Jean-Marie Beckers added functionalities to his model before beginning, once having returned to Liège, joint work with Hans Burchard to start their models from scratch and propose their adaptive 3D model.

He is today professor in oceanography at the University of Liège’s department of astrophysics, geophysics and oceanography, and is heavily involved in several European projects.
