A University of Liège graduate in Biomedical Sciences (2000), Christelle Sanchez developed a taste for research into the mechanisms which govern the development of osteoarthritis during her dissertation. Once that was completed it was quite natural that the young researcher should decide to launch into a doctorate, supervised by Professor Yves Henrotin at the Bone and Cartilage Research Unit. Over the course of the four years Christelle Sanchez analysed the biochemical aspect of the modification of bones within osteoarthritic joint articulations. Once she had defended her thesis (2005) she undertook postdoctoral studies during which she went to the Pierre and Marie Curie University at Paris to test a new in vitro model which enabled a simulation of the mechanical stresses bone cells are subjected to. This model, which she developed herself, earned Christelle Sanchez the Expanscience Osteoarthritis Prize in Basic Research, awarded by the French laboratories of the same name. Once back at Liège, with her postdoctoral studies completed, she became a FNRS postdoctoral researcher at the Bone and Cartilage Research Unit.
