It was at the age of 25, after having worked in various professions, that Marc Aubinet decided to return to the university benches. At the end of his degree in physics, carried out at the University of Liège, he was straightaway hired by the University Faculty of Agronomic Sciences at Gembloux where, as assistant to Professor J. Deltour, he supervised the practical work of general physics students. At the same time, he began a doctorate in a subject which he was passionate about: micro-climatology. This theme has allowed him to specialise, for twenty-five years, in the theoretical and experimental study of the exchanges between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, of which he is today one of the greatest specialists in Europe.
From 2006 onwards he has been developing a methodology for measuring C02 fluxes by turbulence covariance, which has subsequently been widely used by the CarboEurope network. Since 2000 he has directed the Biosystems Physics Unit at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (University of Liège). This responsibility notably involves the management of two permanent CO2 flux measuring stations, one at Vielsalm (province of Luxemburg) and one at Lonzée (province of Namur).
