Jonathan Richir was granted a degree in biology at Namur with a specialisation in ecology and the aquatic soft water environment. He then spent one year at the Faculty of agronomic sciences of Gembloux. (University of Liège), where he was granted a DES in applied biology and enterprises. Jonathan Richir discovered the marine environment when he was studying in Barcelona, at the institute of marine sciences of the Catalan city. There he specialised in microbiology and bacterial ecology. Following his spell in Barcelona, he was granted a Masters in Oceanology at the University of Liège (still in the area of bacterial ecology), then he began his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Sylvie Gobert and Jean-Marie Bouquegneau.
