Nicolas Vandewalle was granted a degree in Physical Sciences at the University of Liège in 1993. He defended his doctoral thesis on superconductivity, supervised by Marcel Ausloos, in 1996. At first an FNRS researcher, he was named a lecturer at University of Liège in 2000. At that time he created GRASP, a research laboratory in statistical physics which studies in particular the behaviour of fluids and assemblies of granular materials (the physics of powders, notably). He was named professor in 2004.
