Background Michel Georges received his diploma in Veterinary Medicine at the ULg in 1983. He went to work as an assistant to Professor Hanset in the genetics department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and his “mission” was the positional cloning of the “culard” gene. He enrolled in a special license program at the ULB in order to train in molecular biology, and he carried out his own research in the laboratory of Professor Vassart at the IRIBHN until 1988. From 1989 to 1993 he worked in the position of “senior scientist” for the Genmark company, a spinoff from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He became Professor Hanset’s successor in 1994 and since that time has directed The Animal Genomics Unit, a multidisciplinary team specializing in the genomic analysis of complex phenotypes of particular importance in medicine and agronomy.
