Robert Germay

Background

Robert Germay received a degree in Germanic Philology in 1963 and the doctorate in Philosophy and Letters in 1972. Born in Liege, he has spent his entire career at the University, and double duty as instructor of dramatic art at the Royal Conservatory of Liege and at the Volkshochschule of Aachen (Germany). A devotee of the theatre and of foreign languages, he also was curator of the library of German philology, giving courses in theory and practice for the Department of Communication when he took over the leadership of the University Theatre of Liege (TURLg). In 1983, the same year, Robert Germay launched the RITU series – 25 years ago. To him the variety of languages spoken on stage opens up the theatre to actors and actresses of all ages. Robert Germay is a lover of life, and for him the theatre is an ongoing celebration and discussion and encounter. In 2008 he will step down from the post he has held for 14 years as President of the International Association of University Theatres (IUTA), created in Belgium 14 years ago, headquartered in Liege, something of which Germay is proud. Robert Germay has acted in or directed upward of 80 plays in French, German, English and Walloon. Alain Chevalier and Dominique Donnay have taken over day-to-day direction of the theatre so that Robert Germay can devote himself to international theatre and to the many performances outside the country given by ‘his’ troupe of actors.
