Background
Robert Halleux was born into a family of Liège metalworkers. After completing his secondary education he gained a degree in classical philology at the University of Liège in 1968. Wonderfully mixing his family heritage and his university education, in 1971 he presented a doctorate thesis whose subject was the metallurgy of precious metals amongst the Greco-Romans.
After several sojourns abroad, Robert Halleux came back to the University of Liège, where he in 1982 created the History of Science and Technology Centre (C.H.S.T.). Today he is a F.N.R.S. research director and the director of the C.H.S.T. The author of numerous books, he was appointed a member of the Institute of France’s ‘Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres’ in 2003. He is at the same time very active in the community and in politics, within the Belgian Labour Party.
